Chelsea news: Pundit can't believe 'crazy' Raheem Sterling twist - 'maybe something bad happened'

Raheem Sterling’s snub from the latest England squad is “crazy”.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, former Aston Villa and Scotland defender Alan Hutton suggested that something may have happened behind the scenes with the Chelsea winger, who has not been selected since the World Cup.

The Chelsea winger has been in top form after a tough first season at Stamford Bridge, netting five goals in 14 appearances in all competitions.

Sterling has been left out of the last four England squads and failed this time despite a swathe of withdrawals including James Maddison and Jude Bellingham.

Hutton is baffled as to why Sterling has once again missed out after returning to the “highest level”.

“It was very harsh,” he told Football Insider.

“He’s playing week in, week out at a high level. he looks back to his best so you wonder if there’s something underlying.

“What’s the reason behind it? There have been call-ups, think of injuries like James Maddison, and they aren’t even talking about Raheem Sterling?

“Within the football community, no one’s asking why he’s not there.

“It’s a strange one. Not that long ago he was England’s best performer so now is he not even being mentioned for the squad? It’s quite crazy.

“It leads you to think that maybe something’s bad happened that we don’t know. Based on his form, he should be in that squad.”
