'Nuclear' - Kieran Maguire: Chelsea and Man City 'could easily end up with a 30-point deduction'

Chelsea and Man City could ‘easily end up’ with a ‘nuclear’ punishment of a 30-point deduction, or even relegation, if found guilty of their FFP charges.

That is the opinion of finance expert Kieran Maguire, who exclusively told Football Insider that the Premier League handbook suggests there are ‘unlimited punishments’ that could be handed to the two clubs.

Both Chelsea and City are subject to Financial Fair Play investigations following Everton’s point deduction this month.

The Toffees were docked 10 points for recording losses of over £105million over a three-year period.

Meanwhile, City face 115 charges of financial breaches dating back to 2009, while Chelsea are under investigation after a number of suspicious payments made under Roman Abramovich’s tenure were brought to light.

As revealed by Football Insider, Liverpool are leading the push for City’s case in particular to be resolved after they were charged in February.

As reported by the Daily Mail, Chelsea and City could both face relegation if found guilty of their respective charges.

Maguire agrees that any panel hearing the cases has the option to deliver a ‘nuclear’ punishment to either club, including relegation.

Relegation is a possible punishment,” Maguire told Football Insider’s Sean Fisher.

“If you take a look at the Premier League handbook, there are unlimited punishments that they can hand out, including expulsion from the Premier League.

So that is very much the nuclear option.

Is it possible? Yes, but not probable that is my reaction to it.

“But we could be looking at a very significant points reduction.

We could easily end up with a 30-point deduction, which for Man City could still mean European qualification.
