McAvennie suggests Ianis Hagi is returning to Rangers after Ibrox source's reveal

Ianis Hagi is under pressure as “everyone wants to see” the Rangers midfielder become his father.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, former Celtic and Scotland striker Frank McAvennie claimed he would not be shocked if Philippe Clement has him in his plans at Ibrox after his loan at La Liga side Deportivo Alaves.

As revealed by Football Insider (24 November), the Gers have not shut the door on the attacking midfielder returning to become a key player after his bright start to the season.

Hagi, the son of the iconic Gheorghe, has notched two goals and one assist in all competitions this season as well as impressing for Romania in the recent international break.

McAvennie has been impressed by the 25-year-old but admitted he will never reach the levels of his dad.

“I think he’s not a bad player at all,” he told Football Insider.

“I don’t know what the situation was with him when Michael Beale was there or why it didn’t work out for him, but I think he is a decent player.

“He’s got a hell of a weight on his shoulders because of his dad. Everyone wants to see him be his dad but that’s not happening.

“What is happening here is this – he’s good in his own right so it wouldn’t surprise me if Clement brings him back in.

“I don’t think Rangers are going to be spending a lot of money in January, I don’t think they can afford it.”
