'Now, I'm thinking...' - West Ham expert drops savage verdict after Ekitike update

Frank McAvennie has insisted West Ham must only sign Hugo Ekitike in January if he is able to star in David Moyes’ “counter-attacking” brand of football.

The former Irons and Celtic striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, claimed Hammers fans have “heard it all before” with the signing of Gianluca Scamacca – who was “never a West Ham player”.

Football Insider revealed on Tuesday (21 November) that Moyes’ side could come back in for Paris Saint-Germain striker Ekitike in the January window.

The Irons tried to sign the forward in the summer but a move failed to materialise – and he has since been frozen out at PSG.

Scamacca left without being replaced in the summer window after an unsuccessful one-year spell in the Premier League.

He is just one of several strikers to fail in east London after being brought in for big money.

Ekitike scored four goals in just 14 starts amid 32 appearances across all competitions last season.

McAvennie told Football Insider: “They’ve brought in Scamacca in the past – he was never a West Ham player. Never has been, never will.

“Now I’m thinking – what if this boy, Ekitike, is the same?

“West Ham play a certain way. If you don’t bring in the right players, then what’s the point in spending money for nothing?

“They did it with Scamacca, they’ve done it with Ings. Ings can’t play the way West Ham want to.

“Fans have heard it all before. It’s got to be someone who is suited to the way Moyes wants to play, even if he is only staying at the club until the end of this season.

“It’s counter-attacking football, and if Ekitike isn’t a striker who can do that – then what’s the point? I’ve heard this from a good source – David only wants a striker who fits his system.
