Revealed: Record-breaking Man United deal includes £80m clause

The renewed deal between Adidas and Man United includes an £80million Champions League contract clause, Football Insider can reveal.

The Red Devils announced in July that they had signed a 10-year deal with the German-based sports manufacturer.

Adidas are set to pay £900million to United over the 10-year period, making it a record-breaking deal in the Premier League.

However, Football Insider understands there is a clause in the contract that lowers the value from £90million per season to £80million if United fail to qualify for the Champions League in successive years.

With Erik ten Hag’s side currently competing in the Champions League, United are guaranteed the full £90million payout for 2024/25.

A similar clause was included in United’s previous kit manufacturer deal with Adidas, lowering the value of the agreement by 30 percent if United failed to qualify.

Football Insider revealed in August that a Champions League clause was included in United’s new Adidas deal.

Remarkably, if United do fail to reach the Champions League in successive years, the £80million payout would still represent the most lucrative manufacturer deal in the Premier League.

Manchester City rank second in terms of manufacturer deals with their agreement with Puma worth £65million per season.

United recorded commercial revenue of £302million in their latest 2022/23 accounts – an increase of £45million from 2021/22.

However, that number is expected to grow significantly again in 2023/24 thanks to their renewal with Adidas and improved front-of-shirt sponsorship deal with Qualcomm.
