Pundit drops verdict on Celtic omitting big names for Motherwell clash

Celtic can boost their chances of Champions League success with a “dominant” performance against Motherwell on Saturday (25 November).

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, former Rangers and Tottenham defender Alan Hutton claims Brendan Rodgers will be unlikely to rest many key players against the Steelmen despite their upcoming European clash against Lazio in midweek (28 November).

The Hoops’ Champions League campaign looks all but over but wins against the Italian side and Feyenoord could see them advance to the knock-out stages or the Europa League.

Their 6-0 away thrashing at the hands of Atletico Madrid revealed the gulf in quality between the sides but the single point gained against the La Liga giants at Celtic Park mathematically gives them hope.

Hutton insists Celtic need a strong display against Motherwell to boost confidence after the international break ahead of the must-win tie.

“I can tell you this, I don’t think Rodgers will look to rest too many,” he told Football Insider.

“The Champions League clash [against Lazio] will be difficult. They’ve got one point so far, so it’s going to be a challenge away from home.

“He’ll want to go and put on a dominant performance after the last one against Atletico Madrid, being a 6-0 defeat, so he will want to improve on that.

“But I think the opportunity to play Motherwell at home will be a chance to get a few goals, get the confidence high – that would be ideal.

“But you have to assess your squad. If there’s any niggly injuries though then he will certainly make changes.”
