Hutton shares 'huge' Scott Wright verdict after unexpected Rangers development
Philippe Clement’s “massive decision” to sub Scott Wright for Todd Cantwell in the Scottish Cup semi-final paid off for Rangers.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, former Gers and Tottenham defender Alan Hutton hailed Wright’s “outstanding” performance as Rangers reached the final with a 3-1 win at Hampden Park.
The 26-year-old was a squad player for previous Rangers bosses but has featured in all of Clement’s games except the recent 2-1 Europa League win over Sparta Prague on Thursday (9 November) due to injury.
The winger has made just 10 appearances this season totaling 419 minutes, but bagged his first goal of the season against Hearts.
Hutton admitted he was cautious when the boss swapped Wright for Cantwell at halftime after the Englishman’s “big” performance.
“I thought Rangers dominated the first half and Hearts were quite happy to sit it,” he told Football Insider.
“The little tweak that I saw from Rangers is they weren’t scared to go forward and go forward quickly down the left-hand side with Abdallah Sima and Sam Lammers.
“But it wasn’t obviously until the second half where Clement made the massive decision to take off Todd Cantwell who was a big influence in the side.
“He brought on Scott Wright who I thought was outstanding. It was a huge change.
“Hearts didn’t have too many chances but Wright scored quickly after coming on – Rangers can be really happy with that.”
