'If he does this...' - Alan Hutton tells Philippe Clement how to get 'absolute success' at Rangers

Philippe Clement must pip Celtic to the title to be considered an “absolute success” at Rangers this season.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, former Gers and Scotland defender Alan Hutton admitted that the Belgian would be given “leeway” without a league title but the Scottish Cup final is a must-win.

The Gers beat Hearts 3-1 at Hampden Park to secure their place in the final, while Clement has successfully shortened the gulf between Celtic to five points.

Rangers look like a different side than under former boss Michael Beale and Clement is yet to lose a game as manager, while the Hoops dropped points to Hibernian in the league and faced a heavy 6-0 defeat in the Champions League to Atletico Madrid.

Hutton hailed Clement for the quick turnaround in Glasgow but warned there was still plenty to do for the Belgian to have a perfect debut campaign.

“I think you’re on the right path to success, but they need to win the cup,” he told Football Insider.

“If he’d started the season and he only won the League Cup, then I don’t think it’s enough.

“For him coming in and turning things around so quickly and possibly winning a trophy in his first few months being the manager is good.

“He’s already shortened the gap with Celtic to five points from seven, so I really think if he wants to get the title over the line, he’ll need to beat Celtic.

“If he does this, then it’s an absolute success. If he finishes the season with just the League Cup and Celtic wins the other trophies, then I think he will given leeway because he came in at such a difficult period.

“At this moment in time, he’s doing excellently.”
