Hutton shares Borna Barisic verdict after big Rangers development - 'it will impact him'

Borna Barisic will have a “difficult” time getting back into the Rangers and Croatia teams.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, former Gers and Tottenham defender Alan Hutton admitted he is a capable defender but poor displays have kept him out of action.

Croatia manager Zlatko Dalic axed the 30-year-old from his team’s initial squad for their upcoming Euro 2024 qualifiers against Armenia and Latvia later this month.

Barisic has not started in the league under new manager Philippe Clement but played the full 90 minutes in the Gers’ 3-1 semi-final victory at Hampden Park against Hearts.

Hutton claims that Ridvan Yilmaz’s league from under Clement will make Barisic’s route back into the first team a challenge.

“I don’t know his character so I don’t know how he tends to deal with things like this,” he told Football Insider.

“But of course, it will impact him. He will be devastated. He’s obviously missed some of the last few games but Yilmaz has come in and done well.

“It can have a knock-on effect to we’ll just have to wait and see. His quality is there for all to see when he gets into the final third.

“His delivery is something that Yilmaz can obviously improve on, but it’s up to Barisic to push his way back in.

“First and foremost, he needs to get back into the Rangers team and then show the Croatian manager that he’s capable of getting back into the national team.

“He didn’t have his best performance for Croatia [in their 2-1 loss to Wales], so when you play for a nation like that with some up-and-coming stars, it’s going to be difficult.”
