Phillips makes '100%' Leeds claim as Bielsa exit plan revealed by source

Kevin Phillips has claimed Leeds United are “100 per cent” right to be preparing for the exit of Marcelo Bielsa.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the 2000 European Golden Shoe winner suggested the 66-year-old could leave Elland Road at the end of the season.

A Leeds source has told Football Insider (4 December) that director of football Victor Orta is working on compiling a shortlist of managers in case Bielsa is to leave.

There is a growing sense this could be the Argentine’s final season at Elland Road.

Bielsa signed a one-year contract extension with Leeds at the beginning of this campaign.

When asked by Football Insider for his assessment of the news, Phillips said: “I think it’s sensible to have targets in mind, 100 per cent.

“Clubs always have a plan B. They will always have options in case things happen.

“There is slight pressure on Bielsa with his job given Leeds’ league position. I don’t think it’s in danger but…

“The owners and sporting director will always have other managers in mind in case Bielsa decides not to stick around. Which is always a worry with Bielsa. You have got to have a backup plan.

“I don’t see Bielsa going anywhere anytime soon though. I think he’ll be there until the end of the season.

“As we know, he is quite stubborn. He will do it his way. Who knows what will happen in the summer though.”

In other news, a pundit is ‘thrilled’ by Leeds undroppable who is now ‘as important as Phillips’.
