Allan McGregor: Pundit issues 'best in the world' Rangers player claim

Noel Whelan has claimed Allan McGregor is “one of the best goalkeepers in the world” after his performance for Rangers against Red Star Belgrade.

The former Aberdeen striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, was blown away by the 40-year-old’s shot-stopping ability and reading of the game.

McGregor followed up his impressive first-leg display with another standout performance during the Gers’ 2-1 defeat on Thursday.

He made a total of 11 saves (WhoScored) to help the Gers progress 4-2 on aggregate.

Whelan insisted McGregor shut up his critics with Thursday evening’s performance.

“He’s had his criticism this year,” Whelan told Football Insider’s Russell Edge.

“But you know that, on his day, he can be one of the best in the world still. You see so many goalkeepers now that can play into their 40s because they train so hard and they keep themselves in good shape.

“You can never take away that quality and that instinct that they have as a goalkeeper. They always say that you adapt your game at certain times if you’re a defender and if you lose a bit of pace, you read the game better.

“He reads the game so well. On his day, this is why he’s so important. This is why he’s still at Rangers playing at 40-years-of-age.

“There are probably not many young goalkeepers out there that would have half the talent that he’s got.”

McGregor has played 36 times across all competitions for Rangers this season.

He has conceded 36 times in those appearances, with 15 clean sheets under his belt.
