Kieran Maguire questions 'strange' Premier League rule change that could land Man City extra £20m

Man City and the ‘Big Six’ would face less competition if clubs vote to change the financial distribution of prize money in the Premier League.

That is the view of finance expert Kieran Maguire, who spoke exclusively to Football Insider about the league’s proposal to change the ratio of prize money distribution.

As reported by the Daily Telegraph, the Premier League are considering a change to their distribution model from the 2025/26 season.

The current model sees all prize money split in a 1:6 ratio, but the new proposal would raise the ratio to 1:8.

It would see clubs at the top end of the Premier League earn a larger share of the prize money handed out to the 20 clubs at the end of the season.

Football Insider revealed that Man City would have pocketed an extra £20million under the new model based on the club’s £160million prize money from 2022/23.

Maguire described the change as ‘strange’, suggesting it would harm the competitiveness of the Premier League.

It does seem rather strange if this goes ahead,” Maguire told Football Insider’s Sean Fisher.

It’s going to reduce competitiveness in the Premier League.

If that’s what club owners want, then that’s their decision.

But from a fan’s point of view, I’m not sure who benefits.

Changing the ratio of distribution has kind of come out of nowhere and the bigger clubs already get far more commercial income.

“They also tend to play more matches because they’re qualifying for Europe so it’s just making the rich richer.
